I see you were able to find your way to our orientation room. Welcome to the firm!
You have been hired to be a part of a select team that has been established to find a viable solution to the debates surrounding the oil sands industry in Alberta. As part of your orientation, and to familiarize yourself with this issue, you are to view the following two videos.
Watch a BBC Report on Alberta’s Oil Sands:
Take a tour of Syncrude’s Aurora Mine:
This special project will take place in 4 different phases:
For the first phase of this project (Day 1), you will be assigned a role as an industry leader, an environmentalist, or an aboriginal advocate. You will then be given a list of resources from which you will individually conduct research on the topic. The role you are assigned will greatly impact your standpoint on this issue.
During phase 2 (Day 2), all of our specialists will be brought together so that they can share and collaborate with others in their field. Together, you will devise a list of the 5 most important issues that your standpoint wants to bring to the table.
Phase 3 (Day 3) of the project is one of the most important. You will be organized into what we in the business like to call “Solution Crackers”. Each solution cracking team will consist of one industry leader, one environmentalist and one aboriginal advocate. Together, you will formulate a solution that you will be presenting to the board of directors during the final phase of this special project. It is extremely important that you ensure that your solution takes into account the economic, the environmental and the aboriginal points of view.
It is extremely important that you ensure that the presentation of your solution takes into account economic, environmental and aboriginal points of view. As long as you have included all three standpoints, your presentation style is completely up to you. The board of directors especially appreciate creative approaches. You may write a song, perform a skit (such as a news broadcast or a talkshow), or create a PowerPoint or poster presentation. If you have another idea of how you would like to present, please run it by the project manager (your teacher) first.
Phase 4 (Day 4), as previously mentioned, is presentation day. The board of directors will be assembled to hear what exciting and innovative ideas your team has come up with.
You could possibly change the future of the oil industry and the world!
You can make your way over to the Process where you will find the details of your task.
We’re counting on you!
Good Luck Teams!
